    초기의 SunOS는 BSD계열이었으나 4.1.x부터 SVR4 계열을 기반으로 개발되었다.

    솔라리스는 SunOS에 OpenWindows등을 합한 것을 말한다.
    이를테면 솔라리스 2.6은 SunOS 5.6에 OpenWindows 3.6이 합쳐진 것으로 이해하면 된다.
    솔라리스 2.7부터는 "2."을 빼고 솔라리스 7이라고 부르고 있다.

    솔라리스 1.0  = SunOS 4.1.1 + OpenWindows 2.0
    솔라리스 1.1  = SunOS 4.1.3 + OpenWindows 3.0
    솔라리스 2.0  = SunOS 4.1.3 + OpenWindows 3.0.1 (여기부터 SVR4 계열)
    솔라리스 2.1  = SunOS 5.1   + OpenWindows 3.1
    솔라리스 2.2  = SunOS 5.2   + OpenWindows 3.2
    솔라리스 2.3  = SunOS 5.3   + OpenWindows 3.3
    솔라리스 2.4  = SunOS 5.4   + OpenWindows 3.4
    솔라리스 2.5  = SunOS 5.5   + OpenWindows 3.5
    솔라리스 2.51 = SunOS 5.51  + OpenWindows 3.51
    솔라리스 2.6  = SunOS 5.6   + OpenWindows 3.6
    솔라리스 7    = SunOS 5.7   + OpenWindows 3.6.1
    솔라리스 8    = SunOS 5.8   + OpenWindows 3.6.2
    솔라리스 9    = SunOS 5.9   + OpenWindows 6.6.1

    솔라리스에서 BSD계열의 명령도 사용할 수 있는데, 바로 /usr/ucb/ 디렉토리에서 찾아볼 수 있다.
    대표적인 명령어가 ps이다. /bin/ps는 SVR4게열, /usr/ucb/ps는 BSD계열이다.
